Can you use Tally on a Mac? Options in 2026
TallyPrime is Windows software. If your laptop is a Mac, you can still work with your books; the right route depends on whether you need to enter vouchers or only read them.
Short answer: TallyPrime is made for Windows, so on a Mac people run Windows in a virtual machine, connect to Tally on cloud or an office PC with a remote desktop app, or read the books in a browser through a connector service such as TallyNexa while TallyPrime runs on a Windows computer at the office. For entering vouchers, choose a virtual machine or Tally on cloud; for reading reports and following up, a browser is simplest.
The short version
| Route | Enter vouchers | What you need | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows in a virtual machine | Yes | A Windows licence and virtual machine software | Apple silicon runs the Arm version of Windows; test TallyPrime first |
| Tally on cloud | Yes | A hosting plan and a remote desktop app for Mac | Hosts charge per user per month; needs internet |
| Remote desktop to an office PC | Yes | A Windows PC at the office that stays on | One person at a time on that PC |
| TallyNexa in a browser | Approved bills only | The connector on the Windows PC that runs TallyPrime | Day-to-day entry stays in TallyPrime |
Route 1: Windows in a virtual machine
Virtual machine software runs Windows in a window on your Mac. You install TallyPrime inside Windows as on any PC.
- On Macs with Apple silicon (M-series chips), the Windows that runs is the Arm version. It runs most 64-bit Windows programs through emulation. Install TallyPrime and try your heaviest reports and your printing before you move your work to it.
- On older Intel Macs, Windows can also run directly with Boot Camp.
- Give the virtual machine enough memory; large companies feel slow on a small allocation.
- Keep your Tally data inside the virtual machine or on a shared folder, and back it up.
- Ask Tally or your Tally partner how your licence applies to a virtual machine.
Route 2: Tally on cloud
A hosting provider runs TallyPrime and your data on a Windows server. You connect from the Mac with a remote desktop app, and from any other device when you need to. Tally Solutions offers a hosted option of its own, and many partners and hosts offer similar plans. Hosts usually charge per user per month on top of the Tally licence.
It suits a team that works from several places. The data sits with the host, so ask where it is kept, how it is backed up and how you get a full copy if you leave.
Route 3: remote desktop to the office
If there is already a Windows computer at the office with TallyPrime, a remote desktop app lets you use it from your Mac. It is quick to set up. The office computer must stay on and awake, and only one person can use it at a time.
Route 4: read the books in a browser with TallyNexa
Many Mac users, often owners and finance heads, do not enter vouchers; they read reports, chase dues and check cash. For that, the books can come to the Mac instead.
- On the Windows computer that runs TallyPrime, install the free TallyNexa connector from tallynexa.ai/download.
- Set TallyPrime’s Client/Server configuration once: TallyPrime acts as Both, Enable ODBC Yes, Port 9000.
- Open the companies in TallyPrime and choose which books to read.
- On the Mac, open tallynexa.ai in Safari, Chrome or any browser and sign in.
You get a live dashboard, receivables, cash flow, GST views, stock and 41 reports with Excel export. New entries arrive within minutes while Tally is open at the office. When that computer is off, you still see the books as of the last sync.
TallyNexa can also post purchase and sales bills you have checked into Tally through the connector, on the Business plan and above. The rest of the entry work stays in TallyPrime on Windows.
Which to choose
- You enter vouchers yourself, mostly from one Mac: a virtual machine.
- Several people enter from different places: Tally on cloud.
- There is a Windows PC at the office and you need Tally now and then: remote desktop.
- You read and follow up, and someone at the office keeps the books: TallyNexa in a browser.
Whichever you choose, keep a backup of the Tally data that you control, and test the route with a real month-end before you depend on it.
TallyNexa is not affiliated with Tally Solutions. It is built for TallyPrime; Tally ERP 9 users should write to hello@tallynexa.ai first.
